The Winston School
The Winston School is a private school which serves students with
learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia and attention
deficits in grades 1-12. It is not affiliated with any religious
organization. The school was established in 1988 and is accredited
by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. There is one
location, at the above address. "We are entirely a school for learning
differences," says Headmaster Mark D. Kimball. "We offer a broad,
multi sensory curriculum. Classes are small. The ratio of students
to teachers in core academic courses is 7:1. When necessary, language
therapy is offered one-to-one."
The 50 faculty members at Winston have degrees and specialties
ranging from counseling and speech and language to special education
and single subject credentials. There is a well-equipped computer
room and many students have adaptive technology provided for in
their IEP's. Although the school has no library on campus, there
are two public libraries in Del Mar, one within walking distance
of the school.
Winston works with families individually to develop plans which
help students make the transition back into the public school system
or into post-secondary education. Programs such as Work Ability
and extensive college counseling often are part of this process.
The school has a parent organization which sponsors information
evenings, school events and fundraisers throughout the year.
