Steven Mayo, Director/Principal
NewBridge School is a private school for grades K-8. It is located
in a country setting with a creek running through it and a large
playing/sports field. It serves students with specific learning
disabilities such as dyslexia, with average or above, IQ, a willingness
to learn, with no behavioral issues. The single campus school, established
in 1996, is not affiliated with any religious nor accrediting organization.
Funding sources are through student tuition.
The curriculum includes many resources and services especially
directed to children with learning disabilities. These include:
phonics training, visualizing and verbalizing, extensive computer
training and usage, Project Read, Slingerland, Lindamood/Bell Bell,
Fast ForWord. Adaptive technology used on campus includes computers,
tape recorders and the Internet. There are in-class libraries and
frequent local library visits.
The ten credential faculty members, all with phonics training i.e.:
Lindamood-Bell, Slingerland, Project Read, create a ratio of 7 students
to 1 teacher. They all have valid degrees in special education:
5 M.A., 4 B.A. and one LHS therapist. All classroom teaching uses
multi-sensory materials. In addition, one-on-one language therapy
is offered. The students are usually referred to outside professionals
for testing. Counseling can be provided through the school district
(via and IEP) on its school site.
The following aspects of NewBridge provide an especially appropriate
and enriching education for their students: 1) Family environment
2) High academic accountability; The students feel challenged. 3)
Positive behavioral approach 4) Multi sensory teaching and "Strategy
Teaching" allows for skill development and success after transition
to other academic surroundings 5) Extensive computer usage/training.
The director and teachers are intimately involved in the IEP process
to develop a plan for each student. They are available for conferencing
and to visit new prospective schools with parent when it is transition
time for the student. They do ongoing investigations to find out
about available programs. There is frequent parent communication
after transition, when necessary.
