Edison Academy is a unique learning environment established by
Dynamic Learning in 1991. It was designed specifically to meet the
needs of bright children who have experienced learning delays due
to mild to moderate learning disabilities. I t serves students in
grades 1st through 8th. Students generally remain at Edison for
approximately 3 years, and then return successfully to a larger,
mainstream setting. Students are supported by educational therapists
at Dynamic Learning during the re-entry period, to ensure the continuation
of the habits and techniques acquired while at Edison.
Edison Academy employs multi-modal teaching strategies and experiential
learning opportunities. Teaching strategies encourage hands-on activities,
game formats, and computer instruction. Additionally, the curriculum
is intended to teach those skills and strategies necessary for success
at the secondary level, such as note-taking, reference skills, and
study skills.
The school year is designed for optimal learning. It is a modification
of the year round school concept, with learning chunks of 7-9 consecutive
five day weeks and intervening vacations of 2 -3 weeks. The school
day lasts from 8:30 to 3:00. In an effort to maximize learning time,
there are no half-days in the schedule. The summer break is the
longest break of the year, with 7 consecutive weeks off. During
that time, children may attend a 4 week summer school.
Edison Academy presents monthly programs for parents. Subjects
of interest to parents are addressed. The school's parent organization,
a nonprofit group called Parents for Alternative Learning, frequently
meets before or after the monthly meetings.
The teachers all have valid teaching credentials with Master's
Degrees in the area of special education. They and their assistants
are nurturing and supportive of the students, and create an atmosphere
of mutual respect among students and staff. Teachers at Edison Academy
are aware that teaching styles must match learning styles, and not
vice versa.
Linda J. Wulle, director and founder of Edison Academy and Learning
Center is one of the creators and writers of the Educational Therapy
Certificate Program at U.C.S.D.
